ARC 2013: Stand united the against government’s austerity programme, CSP urged

5 March 2013 - 4:42pm

Despite the fact that the UK economy is ‘teetering on the brink of a triple-dip recession’, the government is failing to stimulate growth or invest in the creation of jobs, according to Michael Pearson, a steward and safety rep for East Midlands.

Mr Pearson lambasted the austerity programme and claimed it was ‘bringing this country to its knees’. People working in the NHS were seeing services and jobs being cut, while those in the private sector stood to lose clients who had ‘lost the confidence to spend’. Meanwhile, the benefits given to patients with disabilities were being curtailed.

In response, the CSP should continue to raise members’ awareness about alternative strategies, said Mr Pearson, who praised events such as last October’s ‘A Future that Works’ rally, in which the CSP played a prominent part.

His call for the CSP to continue to campaign alongside the TUC and other organisations against the government’s austerity measures was backed unanimously by delegates.
