TUC women's conference: Women in trade unions urged to support each other

14 March 2013 - 4:49pm

It is ‘very important’ that women in trade unions ‘support and encourage’ each other, TUC president and director of employment relations and union services at the CSP, Lesley Mercer, told the TUC women's conference today.

She told delegates that more than half of all trade union members are now women and that ‘more and more women’ were becoming trade union representatives at every level.

On the issue of equality between men and women Ms Mercer said that she had made the issue one of the themes of her presidency along with standing up for the NHS.

‘Equality in its widest sense, tackling discrimination of course, but also income inequality, tax inequality, health inequality...[and] unequal power in the workplace.’

On her role as TUC president she paid thanks to the CSP for supporting her in her role.
