CSP expresses condolences following Indian physiotherapy student’s death

The CSP has backed its Indian counterpart’s campaign for women to be given greater respect in the wake of the brutal rape and subsequent death of a 23-year-old student physiotherapist.

In a letter to Umasankar Mohanty, president of the Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP), Helena Johnson, CSP Council chair, expressed her ‘great sadness’ at the student’s death. The woman died two weeks after being raped on 16 December.

Dr Johnson said: ‘Like other members of the CSP, I was appalled on hearing about this attack and then deeply saddened when I found out that she was a physiotherapy student.

‘I fully support the IAP’s condemnation of this brutal attack and their campaign for greater respect for women in general, and their right to study and to practise the profession of their choice.

She added: ‘The National Health Service in the UK benefits from the services of a considerable number of Indian- educated physiotherapists, and I am sure they would wish particularly to condemn this shocking attack.'

Men arrested and charged

According to the BBC, five men have been charged with the kidnap, gang rape and murder of a woman. The incident sparked widespread calls for the perpetrators to be hanged.

The IAP has offered its condolences to the family of the victim and has vowed to campaign for justice and to ensure that ‘the culprits are punished'.

Indian physiotherapists and physiotherapy students were urged to wear black arm ribbons to express their grief, and to join protests against the ‘outrageous and despicable’ act.
