ARC 2012: Huge variance in emergency and on-call training

10 February 2012

The huge variance in the provision of support and training for non acute physiotherapy staff who have to work on emergency on call rotas and respiratory weekend cover is leading to fear, anxiety and stress.

Abi Pinnick from North London stewards and safety representatives told the conference that the lack of training and experience meant that physiotherapists had lower confidence in their skills and questioned why training was not being provided.

'Why is this training not being provided especially when physiotherapists themselves have identified a problem?

'Trusts are saying that it takes too many resources and is too expensive but what about the quality of care for patients?' she asked.

Sharon Greensill council representative for Yorkshire and the Humber agreed and warned that if organisations were not committed to this kind of training they would also be placed in a very 'vulnerable' position.

Student representative for the north east region Beverley Hodges added that there was also an increasing problem of physiotherapy students graduating without having done a respiratory placement before they were required to work on call.
