ARC 2012: CSP urged to protect staff and reps under AQP

8 February 2012

NHS staff in England should be made more aware of the NHS Staff Passport and the CSP should keep encouraging its use, ARC heard on the opening day of debate.

Motion 4 debated the impact of Health and Social Care Bill on employment rights, with the trend for NHS trust mergers and more staff transferring out of the NHS.

Physiotherapy staff are now facing a range of different employers – threatening their terms and conditions, such as pay and working hours, but also the right to be represented as a member of a union, conference heard.

Katie Wilkie, representing Scottish stewards, seconded the motion and argued there was a major issue for members in not having the CSP to support them under the new arrangements of Any Qualified Provider (AQP).

Gloria Sim from south west north stewards told conference that the NHS Staff Passport supported the principles of the Health and Safety at Work Act and it was important that members be represented in the workplace by a union rep or other representative.

CSP members need to be protected throughout their careers, wherever they are working, she said. The motion also called on the CSP to take a position on ensuring members and the society are recognised with non-NHS employers, and that stewards are supported in their role.

The motion was carried.
