Physiotherapy works for back pain, new Lancet study shows
The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) has welcomed a new study published in The Lancet this week showing that physiotherapists are using effective treatment plans to tackle lower back pain.
Researchers at Keele University compared two groups of patients who presented with early lower back pain. One group was treated using an exercise and education programme, while the other received physical treatment, including manual therapy.
The results showed both treatments were successful in treating lower back pain.
Commenting on the findings, CSP Chair of Council Grahame Pope says:
'This study provides firm evidence that physiotherapy is an effective treatment for low back pain.
'It suggests that a 'one size fits all' approach cannot be applied to back problems and that physiotherapists have the skills and expertise to determine and deliver the most appropriate course of action for patients.
'It should be noted that the alternative to manual therapy offered to patients in this study was not simply advice; it was a complex pain management programme. This includes instruction on suitable exercises, education to reduce fear and anxiety arising from back pain and the development of coping strategies to encourage patients to return to normal activities.
'The study highlights that patients should be given more choice about the intervention they receive and that physiotherapists have the breadth of specialist skills necessary to devise bespoke and effective treatment plans.'
