Make your voice heard - Council elections 2005

Physiotherapists who successfully stand for CSP Council this year will find it enormously rewarding, although they face a huge commitment.

That is the message from current serving members, some of whom will stand down following the Society's annual general meeting (AGM) in October.

This year, there will be elections for 11 seats on the Society's governing body.

In the nationally-elected section, there will be vacancies for one educator, one independent practitioner and two NHS- employed members. The board representative vacancies will cover Scotland and Wales, as well as the London, South East Central, South East Coastal and South West regions. The student place on Council will also be up for grabs.

New Council members will take up their seats following the AGM and serve for four years, except the student representative, who serves a one-year tenure.

Council chair Grahame Pope said: 'In spite of the workload involved, I would encourage everyone to at least consider standing for election.

'Serving on Council represents a real opportunity to shape the policy, the direction and the development of the Society and of physiotherapy in the UK and throughout the world.'

His views are echoed by Sandra Mellors, a member representing NHS physios, who has served a four-year tenure, and is considering whether or not to stand for re-election.

'Being a Council member has given me a brilliant overview of the politics of physiotherapy and the NHS and this feeds into my work as a physiotherapy manager.

'It is a huge commitment to make but it has given me opportunities that I would not have had otherwise,' Ms Mellors added. 'The payback is the first-hand knowledge you gain of new developments in physiotherapy around the country, the chance to network and real access to the CSP as a brilliant resource.'

Fran Woodard, who will stand down this year as the London board rep, said:  'The exposure to knowledge and debate that being a Council member has provided me with has been hugely important to me in my work.

'The training and support provided is excellent and the experience also helped me to learn how to cope with large volumes of paperwork. It also gave me a massive understanding of how professional bodies work.'

Successful nominees to Council must be prepared to commit at least one day a month to working on CSP business but many members choose to devote more time.

Board representatives are expected to attend local board meetings to keep local members informed and to ensure Council is kept up to date about regional views and concerns.

Travelling and subsistence expenses are paid for attendance at Council and committee meetings and, subject to certain rules, members are eligible for a loss of earnings allowance.

When seeking nomination, prospective Council members must have 12 seconders in addition to providing the name of an alternate, who can substitute for them in their absence or replace them should they not be able to complete their tenure.

Completed nomination forms for all Council seats except the student one must be received by the Society by 4pm on Friday April 29. Council nominations must include your election address and a photograph. A faxed form is acceptable but the original must be received within two working days of the closing date.
