Luxembourg's Presidency of the EU

Luxembourg assumed the Presidency of the European Union for six months on 1 January. Find out more about the Luxembourg Presidency's priorities here...

Luxembourg assumed the six-monthly rotating Presidency of the European Union (EU) on 1 January. Among the priorities of the Luxembourg Presidency are:

  • Relaunch the Lisbon strategy of making the EU a knowledge-based society with a competitive economy able to meet the social and environmental expectations of Europe's citizens
  • Completion of the Internal Market
  • An examination of the Stability and Growth Pact to reinforce governance of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU)
  • Financial planning for the EU for 2007-2013
  • Continued enlargement of the EU
  • Conclusion of the Doha development round of world trade

The UK takes over the Presidency from Luxembourg on 1 July until the end of 2005.
