Welcome boost for Society's charitable trust fund

Two generous donations to the CSP Charitable Trust will help the Society help its members

CSP charitable trustees have welcomed two donations to support the education and development of Society members.

The first gift to the trust, from the Maggie Knott fund committee, has led to the creation of the Maggie Knott/PNF [proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation] (UK) fund.

This fund has been created to provide additional support to physiotherapists applying for post-qualifying, nationally accredited clinical courses in neurology.

The original fund was set up in recognition of the work of Maggie Knott, a physical therapist in the US army during the second world war, who worked with a well-known neurologist, Hernán Kabat. Together they established a rehabilitation centre in California and developed the techniques and skills of PNF.

Physiotherapists were able to learn this technique through attendance at formal courses, some of which were established in the UK and run at London's Westminster hospital. The original fund supported these courses and the students participating in them.

As the demand for courses in the UK has since fallen away, the fund committee kindly offered to allocate the remaining funds to the CSP Charitable Trust. The educational awards panel will now administer these as part of its existing funding processes.

The second donation received was from Forester Health, an independent healthcare company that has supported the Joe Jeans memorial scholarship fund for several years. This fund has been in existence since 1994 and helps physiotherapy undergraduates do overseas elective placements.

The significant donation received from Forester Health has enabled the CSP Charitable Trust to set up an interest-generating fund, which will support these student electives for many years to come.

The Society would like to thank both Forester Health and the Maggie Knott fund committee for their generous contributions.

Groups or organisations wishing to make donations or bequests to the CSP Charitable Trust to support education and research opportunities for CSP members should direct initial enquiries to CPD adviser Sarah Fellows. Tel: 020 7314 7820 or email: fellowss@csp.org.uk
