Wales group shares handling guidance with rest of UK

A new tool providing guidance on delegating physiotherapy treatment handling tasks to carers and non-clinical staff is now available UK-wide.

Produced by specialists on the All Wales Treatment Handling Group (AWTHG), the tool was developed to help ensure safe practice and good management in delegating handling tasks to carers, and to standardise physiotherapy documentation.

A physio representative from each health board in Wales sits on the group, which also includes a physiotherapy manager, manual handling advisers and occupational therapists.

The group completed the new tool in September.

Documents within the tool include a checklist, a supporting flowchart, a safer handling advice leaflet and the AWTHG treatment handling risk assessment form.

The documentation has been collated from various sources and existing guidance, including the CSP’s Guidance on Manual Handling in Physiotherapy.

Bethan Evans, physiotherapy lead for learning disability services at Hywel Dda Health Board and former chair of AWTHG, said she was keen to share the work as widely as possible.

‘I am already training on the tool’s use within my health board,’ said Ms Evans. ‘We are not saying therapists have to use it, but we wanted to have all the relevant information available in one place.’

The tool is on the CSP website’s Wales page, at: www.csp.org.uk/wales
