Physios lined up to treat police and fire athletes

A team of 40 physios will be on hand at venues across Northern Ireland next month ready to treat any of the thousands of athletes taking part in the World Police and Fire Games.

The games will see more than 7,000 athletes from more than 60 countries compete in 56 sports at 41 venues around Northern Ireland, from 1 to 10 August.

As well as traditional multi-sport games, the police and fire staff will compete to be the ultimate firefighter, the champion SWAT team, and the world’s quickest muster unit.

This will be the 15th running of the games, and the first to be held in the UK.

Healthcare at the games is being provided by the private 3fivetwo healthcare group, but physios from across Ireland, and at least one from England, have volunteered to join the physiotherapy team at the games.

The 40 physios will provide cover at the various sports venues and in the athletes’ village.

The games’ chief executive, John Tully, said: ‘The health and welfare of our athletes is a real priority during the competitive phase of the games.’
