Physios best placed to assess whiplash, says CSP

The CSP has asked the government to include physiotherapists in its plans to tackle false insurance claims for whiplash injury.

In a letter to the Ministry of Justice Phil Gray, CSP chief executive, said that physiotherapists should sit alongside doctors on independent assessment panels for whiplash claims.

‘Physiotherapists are experts in musculoskeletal conditions,’ said Mr Gray.

‘As well as treating and rehabilitating people with whiplash injuries, alongside other muscle, joint, tendon, ligament and nerve complaints, physiotherapists are involved in academic and clinical research. They work internationally on whiplash and cervical rehabilitation.’

The government is considering a number of new measures, including the introduction of medical assessment panels in response to concerns over the alleged rise in fraudulent or financially motivated insurance claims for whiplash injury.
