Physio wins Woman of the Year award

A physiotherapist has won a 2011 ‘Women of the Year’ award for her inspirational work at Britain’s leading military hospital for wounded service personnel.

Kate Sherman, a clinical specialist physiotherapist, was recognised for her work within a complex trauma team at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court in Epsom, Surrey.

Ms Sherman was one of six winners of the Barclays Women of the Year Awards, who were all chosen because they have proved to be an inspiration to others through their ‘courage, selflessness and dedication’.

‘I am very honoured to receive the Barclays Women of the Year award,’ said Kate.

‘All the staff at Headley Court work very hard and it is an amazing opportunity to work with both the patients and the staff there.’

Ms Sherman was presented with her award at a ceremony in December.

In addition to her ongoing development of the complex trauma service at Headley Court, where she is one of the leaders of a team of 17 physios, Ms Sherman has also been involved in the development of sports as exercise, an initiative used by the Battle Back team at Headley Court as part of the rehabilitation of injured military personnel.
