Physio hits the Silk Road

Physiotherapist Stephen McNally has begun the adventure of a lifetime.

He is working as the core physio for a team of athletes running the ancient trade route known as the Silk Road, from Istanbul to China.

The team is led by championship-winning ultra-runner Kevin Lin, who has previously run across the Sahara.

As the team’s only physio, Mr McNally is responsible for runners’ strength and range of movement as well as aspects of nutrition and hydration.

‘Becoming involved in such a wonderful expedition really appealed to my competitive side,’ he said. ‘As a physiotherapist, this will be a career milestone.’

The route will take them thousands of kilometres from Turkey through Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and into China.

After 150 days, the team aims to reach the former Chinese capital, Xi’an, on 17 September.

Stephen McNally is currently blogging about the adventure on the CSP website. Keep up with the team on Running the Silk Road at:
