The DVD aims to promote understanding and aid treatment
The film aims to support the delivery of a 24 hour postural management pathway, which was developed in 2009 to support children with moderate to severe movement disorders, such as cerebral palsy, who are at risk of developing deformities later in life if they are not encouraged to be as straight as possible.
The pathway is being rolled out to all children with physical disabilities in North and Mid Bedfordshire.
Physio Pam Marmelstein, above right, said that training parents and service providers in 24 hour posture management was proving to be time consuming and labour intensive for the therapists.
‘It is often very difficult for parents and carers to take the concept on board, particularly when they are struggling to come to terms with a difficult diagnosis.
With a DVD people can watch it in their own time and gain a basic understanding that will hopefully make it easier for them to work with therapists,’ she said.
The impetus for the resource was spurred on by responses the team received to a posting on the interactiveCSP paediatrics network.
‘We had 65 responses in total so the need for a resource like this is clearly very current in the minds of paediatric physios,’ added Ms Marmelstein.
The DVD is currently being peer reviewed and is expected to be available to purchase.
