Golfing physio hails Ryder Cup triumph

A globetrotting physio who treated some of the world’s top golfers at last month’s Ryder Cup has described the atmosphere at Medinah Country Club, Illinois, as ‘breathtaking’.

Nigel Tilley, a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist and consultant physio with the European tour, was back in the UK for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrew’s, and took stock of the momentous events that saw the European team triumph at the eleventh hour against their US rivals.

‘It was an incredible experience,’ said Mr Tilley.

‘The atmosphere all week was breathtaking and I am extremely proud to have been there with the European team that fought their way back to make history, grabbing victory from the jaws of defeat.’

He and his colleagues in the physiotherapy service managed to witness some of the action first-hand.

‘We were busy treating players early in the morning and late at night before and after play, so they were very long days working from 16 to 18 hours.

‘The golfers were all fit and well and essentially we were just working with them on routine preparatory and recovery work before and after play each day.’
