Award-winner ‘loves every minute’ of the role

CSP Support Worker of the Year, Danielle Freeth, roused the conference by describing how she loved her job and the opportunities it had thrown up.

A technical instructor, she won the award in 2009 for her ‘outstanding work’ at Wexham Park hospital, Slough, including helping amputee patients with rehabilitation. She said she was nervous at first about working with patients who had lost limbs. ‘I was a bit naive. I didn’t have a great understanding of the challenges. It was a very steep learning curve.’ But she went on to enjoy the patient contact and came to ‘love every minute’. She told delegates how she obtained competencies to teach others, and that she has her own case load and attends consultant ward rounds and discharge meetings. ‘I’m lucky to have respect from my team. I have worked with a fantastic manager who was very supportive,’ she added. She now sits on the CSP’s industrial relations committee and the associates board, where she is trying to raise the profile of associate members.
