Audit proves winner

Two physios from Northern Ireland have won a prestigious award for their work on rehab services for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Brenda O’Neill and Judy Bradley, from the University of Ulster’s Health and Rehabilitation Sciences Research Institute, picked up the COPD project of the year prize at the Northern Ireland Healthcare Awards in February.

Their project, the Northern Ireland pulmonary rehabilitation audit, provided a wide-ranging and detailed assessment of current provision of pulmonary rehabilitation in the province.

Dr O’Neill said that although information on Northern Ireland’s rehabilitation programmes was widely available, their recommendations would ensure the introduction of a comprehensive patient pathway, better communication between those involved in providing rehabilitation, and improved education and training.

The awards ceremony was attended by Northern Ireland’s minister for health Michael McGimpsey. CSP Northern Ireland policy officer Tom Sullivan said Drs O’Neill and Bradley fought off stiff competition to win the award.
