ARC - ‘Lack of cultural awareness’ on overseas placements needs addressing

The CSP should support an NHS framework for international development, Conference decided.

Barbara Jennings, of Chartered Physiotherapists in International Health and Development, said such a framework was needed to ensure strong global partnerships for health. ‘There’s increasing frequency of physio placements overseas but anecdotal evidence suggests a lack of cultural awareness and mentorship,’ she said.

Physios were still uncertain about how a period abroad would affect their NHS pension, and whether they would face difficulties on their return, she added. An NHS framework on international development would address these issues and ensure long-term partnerships for mutual benefit, she said.

Heather Angilley, of the Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists, said: ‘We need a globalised view of therapy services and partnerships with less developed countries.’

Motion 34 was carried on the conference floor (and also on iCSP)
