Amputation Guidance

New guidance on the pre- and postoperative physiotherapy of adults with lower limb amputations has now been published.

The guidance, from the British Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Amputee Rehabilitation, follows the group's previous guidelines on lower limb prostheses. The new guidance covers the period before the start of prosthetic rehabilitation and looks at best practice in patient management.

It is hoped that both sets of guidance will assist in clinical decision making, adapting knowledge into practice and providing recommendations to ensure competence. Agreement about the effectiveness of interventions is based on research, expert opinion, and patient and professional experience. The guidelines have also been endorsed by the CSP, following peer review.
