2012 Paralympics training camps is ‘positive’ for Wales

The CSP has welcomed decisions by three international sports teams to make Wales their training base for the 2012 Paralympics.

South Africa will set up camp in Cardiff during the run-up to the London Games while Australia and New Zealand will also be based in Wales.

It means around 500 sportsmen and women will be based in Wales prior to the Paralympics.

The decisions follow work behind the scenes by the Welsh Assembly Government and partners including Disability Sport Wales and Cardiff Council to promote facilities and ‘legacy’ initiatives.

The South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee said its national team hoped to tap into Welsh expertise, including from their universities, and form ‘working relationships for the future.’

It is hoped that this might create opportunities for local physiotherapy students in Wales to link up with competitors’ support teams, perhaps as volunteers, in the run up to the Games and after the event to develop their skills in disability sport.

CSP policy officer for Wales Philippa Ford said she welcomed the latest ‘positive’ developments.
