‘Hands in the air’ for special schools yoga day

Children at a special school in Dorset filled the sports hall when they took part in a ‘Special Schools Yoga Day’.

Last month’s event aimed to highlight how yoga can support children with special needs and took place at Victoria Education Centre in Poole, a residential and day school for young disabled people that specialises in sport.

Stuart Robertson, a physiotherapist at the school, led the programme of yoga sessions for children, parents and carers and staff.

More than 40 children took part in each of the sessions held for different age groups.

Mr Robertson said the school already held regular yoga classes and had seen many benefits for students’ physical health as well as their mental and emotional wellbeing – where there had been a particularly ‘profound impact’.

He said the day had been a great success, with parents and carers asking for regular classes for themselves and classroom staff enthusiastically backing the event.

The centre has set up a website to encourage other special schools to set up their own programmes. See www.special-schools-yoga.co.uk for more details.
