The Heart Through Life Health and Disease

This 6 day (3 days face to face lectures and 3 days of online learning) module is designed for physiotherapists who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of the heart through life, health and disease; and use that knowledge to inform their advanced clinical practice. Students will be encouraged to critically reflect on their scope of practice and their role within the multi –disciplinary team in the treatment and management of patients with heart disorders and disease

Supporting on-line learning, tutorials and lectures will cover:

  • The normal development and physiology of the heart.
  • The aetiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology and presentation of selected congenital and acquired heart diseases and disorders.
  • Relevant medical investigations, interventions and outcome measures will be critically evaluated in light of the current evidence and service provision.
  • Central to the module will be discussion and debate regarding the contemporary approaches to prevention and treatment of heart disease.

Workshops will cover:

  • The anatomy of the heart
  • Lab based investigations of the heart

The module content will be presented via interactive e-learning content on the UCL virtual learning environment moodle, face to face lectures, seminars and core reading material.

Course requirements

The module is a component of the MSc, Diploma & Certificate in Physiotherapy at UCL. It may be undertaken for CPD only, but if participants successfully complete the assessment after the module, 15 credits may be considered for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) if they are submitted for consideration within 5 years of undertaking the module. These can be used towards a UCL MSc, PG Diploma or Certificate in Advanced Physiotherapy or Physiotherapy Studies. This module is assessed by a 2000 word multi-media evidence based e-poster which is to be submitted on the 5th of March 2018 and the presentations will take place on the 18th of April 2018

Applicants should meet UCL’s usual criteria for studying at Masters level and hold an appropriate physiotherapy qualification. Applicants hoping to transfer credits to the MSc in Advanced Paediatric Physiotherapy should have a BSc in Physiotherapy at a 2:1 or above, or an approved Diploma in Physiotherapy together with evidence of appropriate clinical and/or teaching experience. We expect students to have had at least 2 years post-qualification clinical experience and UK state registration is preferred (httpi/www.hpc-uk.org/). We limit our student numbers so that we can provide high quality, small group teaching, delivered by nationally or internationally recognized expert clinicians and researchers. You are advised to apply as early as possible.
