Living and learning at Southampton is a unique and exciting experience. You will be intellectually challenged and encouraged to perform to the best of your ability. About the faculty
The School of Health Sciences was formed on 1 August 2008 by bringing together the world-class teaching and research from three other schools and departments.
The Health Care Innovation Unit, the School of Health Professions and Rehabilitation Services, the School of Nursing and Midwifery have combined in order to bring improvements to our students and our colleagues in the NHS. By combining the expertise of each area we are now able to offer a truly interprofessional experience to everyone that studies or carries out research here.
We specialise in training and developing the health care professionals of the future. From preparing you for your first professional post, to developing ground breaking research, we have the programme for you:
- Undergraduate and pre-registration
- Post-registration
- Research
Our physiotherapy training covers all areas, from initial training, through to post-qualification and continuing professional development and research.
The School of Health Sciences is proud to be the leader in interprofessional working and all of our students take part in regular sessions with students from other health professions, allowing them to work in the same mixed environment that they will experience in the work place.
BSc Physiotherapy (3 years full time)
Key features
A combination of academic study and clinical placements is designed to integrate theory with experience. Learning and teaching methods vary depending on the nature of the module, and include lectures, project work in groups and self-directed study. You will be assessed on your academic work as well as your clinical placements, using a variety of methods, including written exams, essays, oral presentations, practical exams and development of a research protocol.
Clinical placements occur in blocks throughout the programme. You will be given the opportunity to learn and work with other health care students, developing an understanding of the roles of different professionals in a team-based service. This initiative has been recognised by the Department of Health as "leading edge", and three of the Schools involved (Health Professions and Rehabilitation Sciences, Nursing and Midwifery, and Medicine) are recognised nationally for the development of inter-professional learning.
