About the faculty

We are a lively, student-centred interdisciplinary organisation that has expertise in education, research and practice innovation in health and social care. The School of Physiotherapy was established in 1997.

The course philosophy embodies the requirement to develop a professional Graduate Physiotherapist who has a comprehensive understanding of the scope and nature of physiotherapy practice and is able to respond flexibly to current and future demands of a rapidly changing health care environment. In addition, an understanding of the impacts of health and social care policies, and issues which underpin healthcare delivery is a foundation of the philosophy.

The curriculum has been designed to balance the needs of the patient/client, the health service, the higher education sector, the professional and statutory bodies, and the students themselves.Learning and teaching strategies for the BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy programme are designed to enable students to move from some dependence to self-direction in order to take responsibility for their own learning as they progress through the course.

Opportunities for shared learning with students in other healthcare disciplines help to promote interprofessional team working. Teaching strategies are informed by the course philosophy and by the recognition that the course participants are adult learners. Lectures, Practical sessions, Seminars, Tutorials, Workshops, Directed Study, Case-based studies/Client focussed scenarios, Independent Projects, and group assignments develop individual and team working skills.

A portfolio, based primarily on clinical experience, is used to develop students' recognition of their own achievements and acquisition of skills and knowledge and promote life-long learning. A Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) system is a key process within the programme of study which is integrated into the student support and learning experience and is a means by which students can study and learn together. This process is also facilitated in the clinical placement experience and has been consistently evaluated as being beneficial by the student body.

Practice Based Learning provides students with exposure to inter- disciplinary working, the opportunity to participate in team meetings and case conferences etc. in a range of settings. Our educational resources and facilities include: dedicated teaching and practical rooms, anatomical models, bone library, excellent medical library resources, access to computing resources, and an anatomical dissection room.

London has a diverse population and to meet the healthcare needs of these citizens our recruitment reflects this diversity. Applications are considered on an equal basis, irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, marital or parental status, social class, nationality, religion, or ethnic origin. The School is carefully monitoring the selection process on a regular basis in order to ensure that no discrimination takes place. Students with disability are encouraged to discuss the disability with either the Admissions Tutor or Disability Officer.
