About the faculty/school

The School of Health and Social care teaches a very wide range of pre-qualification courses, which include all branches of nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, operating department practice, osteopathy, paramedic emergency care, and social work. This diversity gives our physiotherapy programme a strong multi-professional focus, and you will have many opportunities to share your learning with students from other nursing and health and social care professions. This is a key component of the physiotherapy programme, as it is essential to developing your teamwork skills and your understanding of the other roles you will encounter in practice.

The School offers a very friendly and supportive environment in which to learn. We have excellent teaching facilities including a state-of-the-art AVA classroom and lecture theatre facilities, dedicated clinical skills suites and simulation resources, which include a very equipped movement laboratory, family of computerised simulation manikins (including a Simbaby and Birthing mother), an extensive range of anatomy models and fully networked computer rooms. We also have excellent library resources, accessible both through the web and through a range of locally based facilities on University and NHS sites.

Information technology plays an increasingly important role in health care courses and an extensive range of learning resources can be accessed through ‘Brookes Virtual’; an online repository of lectures, handouts, information and learning exercises. In addition to the tutor support you will receive in the School, there are also a range of other excellent student support resources to assist.

For example, we have fully networked computer rooms providing fast internet access and access to excellent library resources via the web and a through a range of locally based facilities on University and NHS sites.

BSc Physiotherapy

Key features

This highly popular three year full-time Physiotherapy programme offered by Oxford Brookes will equip you with the skills required to practise as a competent physiotherapist in a variety of environments. Note: We are able to offer some places to international applicants.

Throughout the programme you will benefit from teaching, which integrates theory and practice. To facilitate this, there are a high number of practical sessions with an emphasis on working within the context of typical clinical scenarios. Students also have the opportunity to attend anatomy dissections. There is an emphasis on inter-professional learning which is facilitated through the course. Students receive feedback regularly via assessments and from a personal tutor.

A variety of assessment formats are used, which supports students with different learning styles. Assessments include written work, vivas, presentations and clinical practice. Clinical practice takes place in a variety of settings and includes internationally renowned hospitals, specialist settings in the community and private practices.

The programme consists of units of study called modules, these are divided into physiotherapy specific and shared modules. The specific modules are designed to provide you with the knowledge, confidence and skills required of a physiotherapist. The shared modules, which run throughout the programme, are taken with students on other health or social care programmes. These modules introduce you to key concepts, values and skills pertinent to working in partnership with patients and staff from other disciplines.

In your first year you will be introduced to the core areas of physiotherapy practice. Within musculoskeletal, cardio-respiratory and neurological themes, you will study:
  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Physiology
  • Biomechanics
  • Kinesiology
  • Basic Physiotherapy techniques
  • Pathophysiology

In your second and third year, you will continue to develop and apply your physiotherapeutic knowledge as you study more advanced aspects of the physiotherapy core areas. You will have the opportunity to explore the research process and build on your shared modules from the first-year.

Your studies will take place within the University and in clinical practice settings. Clinical education in practice is a very important part of the physiotherapy course, and during this period you will undertake the majority of the required 1,000 hours of clinical practice.

You will focus on developing clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills. You will take a critically evaluative approach to practice while also developing a body of sound theoretical knowledge. There is potential for students to undertake overseas placement learning.

As part of your academic studies you will also undertake a sustained independent period of study involving the critical investigation of a topic or issue. This research work is presented in the form of an article for a scientific journal and a poster presentation at the end of your third year.
