About the University

Gaining its Royal Charter in 1966, the University of Bradford offers a range of practical courses across the spectrum of disciplines: engineering, applied sciences, health sciences, management, and the social sciences.

In 1996 the University integrated the Bradford and Airedale College of Health to form the School of Health Studies, which has gone on to establish an excellent record for its teaching quality and graduate employment. Set on a convenient campus (close to the centre of a lively city with one of the lowest costs of living in the country), most students live within easy walking distance of the University.

Bradford is centrally located in the UK, with easy links by road, rail and air to the rest of the UK, and is surrounded by some of the most magnificent scenery in England. A new School of Health Studies building is due for completion in July 2011.

About the faculty

According to the last QAA institutional review, Bradford's School of Health Studies is among the best in the country for teaching quality. 

The University offers a range of stimulating and exciting courses at degree and diploma level. If prospective students are already qualified, options for continuing professional development are available. These include individual modules, short courses, and Masters degrees with embedded certificate and diploma pathways.

The School of Health Studies provides undergraduate and post-graduate programmes for Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, Nursing, Midwifery and Reproductive Health, Radiography, Service Development and Improvement and Dementia Studies.

The School of Health Studies is proud of its modern and well-equipped facilities, including lecture theatres, computer suites, and the interactive learning centre with videos, anatomical models and multimedia programs, video editing, conference facilities and Wireless networking.

The University boasts a large movement laboratory which is a dedicated teaching and research facility. The on-site specialist specialist library includes over 60,000 books and journals, offering access to online database.

The University maintains excellent working relationships with local Trusts and placement providers who consistently feedback on the high quality of our students. With a very good employment record for new graduates, a high percentage of the University's students gain full-time employment within the first 6 months of graduation.

Many of Bradford's academic staff maintain professional skills by working part time in clinical practice. All staff continue to develop teaching and learning skills and professional practice.

Student support

All academic staff are committed to providing academic and pastoral support to all students. Students have access to a personal tutor for the duration of their studies.

Additional support is provided in the form of student counselling, health service, creche, careers and job shop service, learner development unit, and the Escalate unit working together with local employers, a careers service, disability office, to offer support during students' studies, plus first class sport and leisure facilities.

Physiotherapy students have the opportunity to participate in a student lead Physiotherapy clinic to help consolidate knowledge and skills and help prepare for clinical practice.

The School has dedicated Recruitment & Admissions staff and a Student Support Unit which is responsible for recruitment and student support issues throughout the School of Health Studies.

Bradford has current students who are available to talk to/ e-mail who are willing to help students through the UCAS application process and settle into University life.

Programme information

Opportunities for part-time study towards MSc, postgraduate diplomas and certificates are also available in Amputee Rehabilitation, Continence for Physiotherapists, Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Practice, Physiotherapy in Women’s Health, Rehabilitation Studies and Sports Physiotherapy.

MSc route is available for new physiotherapy graduates and overseas health professional graduates.

Individual modules can be undertaken as an associate student, eg: Diagnostic referral procedure for musculoskeletal management, Management of Chronic Pain in Musculoskeletal Practice, Measurement in Rehabilitation, Physiotherapy and Trauma Management in Sport, Therapeutic Exercise in Rehabilitation, and Independent study in Rehabilitation.

BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy

1st year of study is university based, using enquiry based learning to develop a sound knowledge and skills base. Use of Bradton which is an online, virtual community containing media rich individual and group case scenarios based on service user and carer experiences. A range of innovative assessments are used to help consolidate learning and develop professional skills.

2nd year continue developing clinical and academic skills, a non-credit rated clinical placement is completed prior to Christmas. Semester 2 includes 3 clinical practice placements. A three week non-credit rated elective placement, in a location and specialist area of your choice is undertaken in the summer vacation.

1st and 2nd year Physiotherapy students have the opportunity to participate in a student lead Physiotherapy clinic to help consolidate knowledge and skills and help prepare for clinical practice.

3rd year consists of 3 clinical placements, submit a fully worked up research proposal and a group developed evidence based clinical guideline. Both modules reflect some optionality in your choice of subject area.

BSc (Hons) entry requirements

  • A strong GCSE profile (or equivalent) to include English, maths and a biological science.
  • Standard offer 280 UCAS points
  • This may be eg: 3 GCE A-levels, Grade BBC, preferably a Grade B in a biological science, Sports Science and/ or PE. General Studies will not be considered as one of your A-levels.
  • Academic requirements may be met by completing eg: Access and BTEC, extended diploma, Irish Leaving Certificate, or a first degree in a related area.

MSc entry requirements

  • Relevant professional qualification, normally at Bachelors degree level (Ordinary or Honours) or Level 3 equivalent.
  • Physiotherapists or other health professionals registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC) or other relevant professional body.
  • Normally have two years post qualification experience and normally have experience of working in a relevant speciality
  • Students from outside the UK must also have the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) overall band of at least 7
