Spotlight on research

Evidence-based research is the bedrock of physiotherapy. It is what underpins the profession and its practice and it is what will enable it to move forwards.

Engaging with research is crucial for all physiotherapists whatever their grade. While only some clinicians will become active researchers, all must become active users of research. In this new series, Spotlight on research, we aim to help members to do this. Each article will examine a significant, recent study, assessing its findings and considering its potential, in particular in light of policy demands.

Our aim is to inform you, to enable you to steer your way through the often confusing evidence, and to introduce new ideas. We hope to show how members, in a variety of settings, are responding to the challenges brought by the research, and to encourage members, on the basis of the available evidence, to work towards the best possible outcomes for patients.

The first article looks at neurology - specifically stroke rehabilitation. Later articles will consider research in areas such as public health, pain and musculoskeletal conditions.
