NHS next stage review

The Review seeks to build on the progress made in delivering the vision set out in the NHS Plan (DH, 2000) and the Government's reform agenda, to identify the way forward for a 21st Century NHS. This should be clinically-driven, patient-centred and responsive to local communities.

The NHS Next Stage Review – Final Report (avaliable as a PDF document download at the foot of this page) was published on the 30th June 2008, alongside four other documents:
  1. A High Quality Workforce: NHS Next Stage Review
  2. NHS Next Stage Review: Our vision for primary and community care
  3. Next Stage Review: Our vision for primary and community care: what it means for nurses, midwives, health visitors and AHPs
  4. the NHS Constitution consultation

The outcome of the NHS Next Stage Review will determine much of the future 'shape' of the NHS in England. This therefore is a significant opportunity for members to comment to influence the future 'shape' of the NHS in England.

photo of Lord DarziThe key priorities set out by Lord Darzi have informed the Strategic Health Authority visions that have been recently published and will inform the detailed local plans being drawn up by Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) in England, Autumn 2008. It is extremely important that CSP members are engaged at an early stage in the work to develop these local PCT plans. To begin the dialogue at a local level the CSP recently sent information to commissioners of services in England, highlighting the role of physiotherapy in addressing the key areas identified by Lord Darzi's Next Stage Review.

The CSP has now published a briefing on the NHS Next Stage Review to outline the key elements emerging from the NHS Next Stage Review process and the opportunities presented for physiotherapy and other AHPs to promote their combined and unique contributions to health and well being service delivery. We urge all members to read this briefing.
