Member services

You may search the OPAC without logging in but you need to login to reserve items, view you borrowing account or save searches. (There is a 'Save Search' icon at the top right hand corner of the screen. Name the search and this will be saved in your account.)

Logging in

The login screen will appear as soon as you opt for a member service. Please ensure that you have read the Terms and Conditions before proceeding. You will need to enter your user ID on the first screen and your password on the second. Your user ID and password are the same as for this website.

If you use a Hotmail email account, or other internet based email system, please be sure to add the CSP domain - csp.org.uk to your list of safe domains or 'safe list'. This will prevent emails from the library system being forwarded to your junk email folder.

See our page on lending services for more details.

OPAC content

Please note that CSP responses to consultation documents ceased to be added from the beginning of 2006. Media releases have not been included since the beginning of 2007 but old records are still in OPAC and available if needed. OPAC also includes substantive articles from CIOG journals that are not indexed in commercial bibliographic databases.

Guide to searching

There are a number of ways in which you can search OPAC: start by reading our search guide below. And once on the website, see the list in the left hand menu: http://csplis.csp.org.uk

Once on the OPAC website, see the list on the left hand menu:

Searches

  • Title/Author Search: the title/author search allows you to search a title author combination. This is useful to check if we have a known item
  • Words anywhere: this is a very wide-ranging search that will look for particular words in any field. You should select the words are an exact phrase, all exact or similar words (and) or any word or similar word (or)
  • Author search: Use this to find all the works by a particular author. An author may use one or more initials or their full forename in a publication; whichever they chose to use will be in the catalogue. If you simple search by their surname the catalogue will show all entries for that name and you can then chose those you wish to see. An author may be a personal author e.g. Bobath, Berta or a corporate author eg: Department of Health
  • Subject search: All entries in the catalogue are indexed using terms in the thesaurus to reflect the subject matter of the document. If the 'Retrieve a list of subject terms' is ticked the search will retrieve a list of subjects with the number of documents to which that subject has been apply; if it is not ticked it will simply retrieve the documents. If a term is entered that is not a preferred thesaurus term the preferred term may be shown together with the number of documents indexed with that term. eg: allergy use hypersensitivity
  • Journal title search: use this search to see if we have a particular journal. You will be able to see the extent of our holdings but this does not show you the articles within the journal. To see all the journal titles, enter the search term '%'
  • Journal article search: We index substantive articles within the CIOG journals that are not indexed in commercial bibliographic databases. If you want to search commercial bibliographic databases for journal articles either use the ‘Databases’ link on the left hand side or see our page on freely available databases
  • Advanced search: The advanced search permits you to combine terms using Boolean operators (and, or, not) and to select the fields you wish to search. Title, subject, author (personal or corporate), words, series, classmark or ISBN and you may select if the terms entered is and exact match, the first part of the field or anywhere in the field
