Speciality standards

Prior to the publication of the revised SOPP in 2000 there were around 30 separate publications for various specialist areas. Each publication covered topics such as treatment modalities, clinical settings and specialist practice codes. Many of them were developed in conjunction with the CSP's Clinical Interest and Occupational Groups (CIOGs). These publications are no longer available from the CSP.

The CIOGs were involved in the consultation process during the production of the revised SOPP in 2000. At this stage it was decided that a separate section on 'Specialty Standards' was not appropriate, as most groups had no additional material to add to the core standards once specialty-specific words were removed. It was acknowledged that a great deal of material contained within the previous specialty booklets was common to all specialities and thus more appropriately contained in the core standards.

However some members do have real needs in some areas related to their specialist work such as:
  • specific assessment tools /techniques
  • objective information to collect
  • contraindications for specific treatments
  • specific health and safety guidance
  • measurement tools
  • specific outcome measures.

Some COIGs provide this type of information and additional guidance which sits within the framework of the SOPP, but does not replace any aspect of the SOPP. CIOGs can also offer advice on particular specialist CDP opportunities. The CSP's outcome measures database provides members with an extensive list of validated outcomes with which to measure the effect of their treatments.
