Main affiliations
- Amnesty International
Amnesty International is the foremost campaigning organisation in the field of human rights. It campaigns both for individual victims and on broad human rights issues such as violence against women. The CSP is affiliated to Amnesty and has a seat on Amnesty UK's Trade Union Network Committee, which exists to promote the engagement of trade unions and trade unionists in the work of Amnesty International through the advancement of mutual solidarity and activism on human rights, taking account of the interests and priorities of the member unions. www.amnesty.org.uk - Baby Milk Action
Baby Milk Action is a small non-profit organisation campaigning to stop misleading advertising of breast milk substitutes, particularly in the third world, and to end the avoidable suffering caused by inappropriate infant feeding. Baby Milk Action works within a global network to strengthen independent, transparent and effective controls on the marketing of the baby feeding industry. The CSP is a supporter of Baby Milk Action.

The Cuba Solidarity Campaign campaigns in the UK against the US blockade of Cuba and for the Cuban people’s right to self-determination and sovereignty. The CSP is affiliated to and has been a supporter of CSC since 2001, following a decision by the Industrial Relations Committee. Of particular interest to the CSP is the Cuban health care system which achieves very good results in a developing country subjected to a major trade blockade.

The Campaign to End Child Poverty is working to eradicate child poverty in the UK. The campaign is formed from children’s and other charities, social justice groups, faith-groups, trade unions and others concerned about the unacceptably high levels of child poverty in the UK. The CSP is affiliated to the End Child Poverty campaign.

Justice for Colombia (JFC) campaigns for human rights, workers' rights and the search for peace with social justice in Colombia. Established in 2002 by British trade unionists, JFC was created in response to the appalling human rights crisis in Colombia - and particularly the abuses committed against trade unionists. In that year alone, 184 trade unionists were assassinated and Colombia remains the most dangerous place in the world to be a trade unionist. The CSP is affiliated to JfC.
www.justiceforcolombia.org - National Assembly Against Racism
Established in 1994 the NAAR’s aim is to raise awareness on the whole range of anti-racist issues affecting British society. In all its activities the NAAR is guided by its founding principle that the agenda against racism must be set by those who experience it. It is therefore black-community organisation led, has a majority of black representatives on its executives, and works closely with victims and their families when taking up particular cases. It runs campaigns and education programmes on fighting the far right, promoting asylum and immigration rights, and speaking out against and highlighting acts of racial violence. The CSP is affiliated to NAAR.

The National Pensioners Convention (NPC) is Britain's biggest pensioner organisation representing over 1000 local, regional and national pensioner groups with a total of 1.5m members. The NPC’s main objective is to promote the welfare and interests of all pensioners, as a way of securing dignity, respect and financial security in retirement. The CSP is a regular supporter of the NPC.

Stonewall was formed to put the case for equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people on the mainstream political agenda. Stonewall provides research into discrimination in the workplace and homophobia, including bullying in schools. The CSP makes regular donations to Stonewall and has used Stonewall's information in supporting our own LGBT members. Stonewall officers have also given presentations at meetings of CSP LGBT network.

The TUC is the voice of Britain at work. With 58 affiliated unions representing nearly seven million working people from all walks of life, the TUC campaigns for a fair deal at work and for social justice at home and abroad. The TUC has many links with political parties, business and the community, and its representatives sit on public bodies and government advisory groups at national and international level.
The TUC is also involved in lobbying the government direct and organises regular meetings between affiliated unions and government ministers in key areas of the public sector, including health. The TUC's affiliated trade unions receive a range of quality services that support trade union officers and negotiators, aid recruitment and retention of members and assist policy development and implementation. The TUC has offices in the English regions, Wales and Scotland. The CSP has been a member of the TUC since 1993.
The CSP's director of Employment Relations & Union Services sits on the TUC’s General Council and Executive while other staff regularly attend TUC meetings. CSP members attend TUC conferences as delegates and participate in proposing, seconding and voting on motions.

The ICTU is the all-Ireland equivalent of the TUC, covering both Northern Ireland and the Republic. The CSP is affiliated to the Northern Ireland section.

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) is the voice of trade unions in Scotland. The STUC is independent from the TUC, although the two work closely together.

The Trade Union Disability Alliance (TUDA) is a campaigning organisation of disabled trade union members. TUDA aims to co-ordinate the perspective of disabled people in the trade union movement; bridge the gap between the trade union and disability movements; work within, and lobby, trade unions to ensure they make their own services accessible and relevant to disabled members; promote understanding of disability as an equalities issues and work with disabled people to persuade them of the benefits of trade union membership and activity. The CSP is a member of TUDA and has used their publications to produce briefings on employment rights for members.

Unite Against Fascism is a national campaign with the aim of alerting British society to the rising threat of the extreme right, in particular the British National Party (BNP), gaining an electoral foothold in this country. The CSP supports UAF and our affiliation to UAF sends a strong message that the CSP will not tolerate the sentiments of the extreme right.

- Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS)
ACAS aims to improve organisations and working life through better employment relations, providing up-to-date information, independent advice, high quality training and working with employers and employees to solve problems and improve performance.

The Social Partnership Forum is a tri-partite body made up of NHS Employers, NHS trade unions and the government. The SPF works to ensure early involvement for both employers and the unions in policy development and implementation, particularly in relation to the workforce implications. The CSP is represented on the Social Partnership Forum by its director of Employment Relations & Union Services (ERUS).

The Equality and Human Rights Commission champions equality and human rights for all, working to eliminate discrimination, reduce inequality, protect human rights and to build good relations, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to participate in society. The Commission was formed on 1 October 2007 when the three, previously separate, equality commissions – the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), Disability Rights Commission (DRC), and Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) - merged into the new Equality and Human Rights Commission.

The Health and Safety Executive is the single national regulatory body responsible for promoting the cause of better health and safety at work.

The Institute of Employment Rights, a registered charity, is an independent organisation acting as a focal point for the spread of new ideas in the field of labour law. It publishes booklets and organises seminars on topics of particular interest.

LRD is an independent research organisation publishing news and information for trade unionists. Around 2,000 trade union organisations are affiliated, representing more than 99% of total TUC membership.
www.lrd.org.uk - NHS Employers As the employers' organisation for the NHS in England, NHS Employers keeps NHS trusts up to date with the latest workforce thinking; provides practical advice and information; and helps them to network and share knowledge. NHS Employers also manages the negotiation infrastructure that supports discussions between NHS employers and unions on pay and terms and conditions.

This is the lead body with a strategic focus where partners work together on national priorities for health in Scotland, eg the policy on smoking in public places. It has a clear focus on service change and modernisation, service delivery and the workforce.

STAC is a partnership organisation which exists to collectively negotiate terms and conditions issues for NHS Scotland staff other than those which pertain exclusively to recognised separate collective bargaining arrangements.

SWAG's remit is to ensure NHSS operates as an exemplar employer and to consider all matters relating to workforce strategy and employment policies. It is responsible for the formulation and review of PIN (Partnership Information Network) policies. These set out the minimum standards which Health Boards must adhere to in their local policies, eg Dignity at Work, Employee Conduct and Capability etc.

Thompsons supply the CSP’s legal services [link to Legal Services page] to members. Thompsons only acts for claimants and employees and is recognised as the leader in its field.

Unionlearn aims to help unions to become learning organisations, offering programmes for union reps and regional officers and strategic support for national officers. It also help unions to broker learning opportunities for their members, running phone and online advice services, securing the best courses to meet learners' needs and kitemarking union academy provision to a quality standard. Unionlearn also promotes learning agreements and identifies and shares good practice.

UCU is the largest post-school union in the world, representing more than 120,000 academics, lecturers, trainers, researchers, managers, administrators and others in universities, colleges, adult education and training organisations across the UK. The CSP has a joint membership arrangement with UCU.

The Welsh Partnership Forum is a tripartite group, sponsored by the Welsh Assembly Government, consisting of representatives of the fourteen recognised healthcare trade unions for NHS Wales, representatives of senior management for NHS Wales and representatives from the Welsh Assembly Government. The main purpose of the Welsh Partnership Forum is the development, support and delivery of workforce policies on national, regional and local levels. The Forum provides strategy leadership on partnership working between employers and employee representatives and is involved in all aspects of strategic implementation including planning, education, recruitment, retention, development and support of NHS Wales staff. Peter Finch, CSP assistant director of Employment Relations & Union Services, is joint chair of the WPF.

Trade Unions in the Health Service
- British Orthoptic Society (BOS)
A TUC affiliated trade union and professional body representing orthoptists, with just over 1,500 members. Given the nature of the profession, there may be only one or two members in each workplace.

A TUC affiliated trade union and professional body representing dieticians, with a total membership of nearly 6,000.
www.bda.uk.com - British Medical Association (BMA)
One of the largest and most influential trade unions in the health sector, representing the interests of both hospital doctors and GPs. In some cases, BMA representatives may take part in local staff side and joint negotiating committees. Where this happens, the BMA can be a powerful ally. However, the BMA reserves the right to enter into negotiations on behalf of its members outside of the established negotiating structures. Where this happens, the BMA will take no part in joint negotiations. The BMA is not affiliated to the TUC.

A TUC affiliated trade union and professional body representing community and district nurses, with a total membership of nearly 4,000.

The FCS is the trade union arm of the Association of Clinical Biochemists, representing members in the clinical scientist professions. FCS is not affiliated to the TUC.

One of the large general trade unions operating in the Health Service, the GMB has over 700,000 members throughout industry but a relatively small NHS membership of around 60,000. In the NHS, the GMB will largely represent ambulance staff, domestic, maintenance and support staff, although the white collar branch of the GMB (“Commercial Services Section”) will also represent white collar office staff. The GMB is TUC affiliated.

The trade union and professional body representing midwives. The RCM has a membership of around 38,000 and is not affiliated to the TUC.
www.rcm.org.uk - Royal College of Nursing (RCN)
Although not TUC affiliated, the RCN is one of the strongest and most influential trade unions and professional bodies in the health sector. The RCN represents qualified nurses and has recently extended their membership to non-qualified grades of nurses as well. The RCN has a membership of 370,000.

The TUC affiliated trade union and professional body for chiropodists and podiatrists, with a total membership of 8,000.

The Society of Radiographers is the trade union and professional body for radiographers in the NHS. It is TUC affiliated and has a total membership of just under 18,000.

Unite - AMICUS is the trade union that merged with the TGWU. In the NHS, Unite - AMICUS represents speech and language therapists, MLSOs, laboratory staff, hospital physicists, art, music and drama therapists as well as some maintenance staff. Unite - AMICUS is TUC affiliated. They also represent health visitors (CPHVA), although in Scotland they are represented by UNISON.

In the NHS members of Unite - T&G include domestic and maintenance staff, although the white-collar section (ACTS) will also represent some administrative and office staff. It is TUC affiliated.
www.unitetheunion.org.uk - Union of Construction Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT)
Although a large, TUC affiliated trade union with a total of 112,000 members in the construction industry, UCATT only has small numbers of members in the NHS. These will be concentrated in the works or maintenance departments.

UNISON has nearly 1.3 million members. Although UNISON members work in many different industries, the two main sectors are health and local government. In terms of the NHS, UNISON will have members in most professions and occupations. In particular, UNISON represents occupational therapists, as they have a contract with Unison to provide industrial relations services for the BAOT, nurses (both registered and non-registered nurses) and related grade staff such as assistants and technical instructors (those who are not in CSP membership). UNISON is TUC affiliated.
